What is phytoremediation?

The CHS/EIC Phytoremediation Project was developed to address the closing of the Scales Road Landfill in southern DeKalb County. The landfill issue is one that CHS students have been involved in since 2001.

The project has three major components:

Social Justice and Social Action
In year one, Social studies classes will research and analyze current policies, research the history of the landfill issue, conduct forums with political representatives and representatives of state and local environmental agencies, and conduct citizen forums.

Biological sciences
In year one, Biology students will complete units in the following:
Plant propagation
Plant pathology
Phytoremediation
Soil organisms

Environmental Science
In year one Environmental Science students will complete units in the following:
Soil Analysis
Hydrology
Landfill composition and biodegradation of organic and inorganic materials

Year two will begin propagation and field testing.

Environmental Science students will conduct field investigations at the Scales Road perimeter, working with the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Science.

Biology students will conduct propagation and field testing of plants at Wonderland Gardens, working with the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Science.

Social Studies classes will develop a community website and conduct citizen forums.
