Allen Elementary School, Muscogee County
Allen Elementary constructed an outdoor classroom featuring
multiple gardens, bird feeders, birdbaths, birdhouses, picnic
tables and a path representing the Chattahoochee River. They
have also constructed a "Patriotic Pathway" which
features a huge mural of the Chattahoochee River and landmark
businesses in Columbus. EIC teachers have emphasized peer-to-peer
instruction and hands-on experiences in the new outdoor classroom.
Allen Elementary also worked with neighboring EIC school,
Arnold Magnet Academy to provide its students with a water
festival. Among numerous other hands-on activity stations,
the Allen students investigated pond water to identify and
categorize the macroinvertebrates that live there.
